Luther, Theology, and the Research University
Christine Helmer is Professor of German and Religious Studies at Northwestern University. In 2017 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Helsinki for her work on the German reformer, Martin Luther, as well as for her commitment to theology as an important contributor to the intellectual life of the university.
How can theology be a viable discipline in the research university today? Professor Helmer addresses this question by drawing attention to how Lutheran theologians at the turn of the twentieth century conceptualized the modern study of religion. She will sketch out the contemporary implications for theology of these origins and propose a way of understanding theology as the production of knowledge.
