Emily Morrell is a first-year doctoral student in the Religion in America subfield. Emily’s research interests include the intersections of race, labor, and religion in the South during the twentieth century. In particular, her work examines late twentieth century shifts in Southern agriculture and industry. Emily is interested in exploring the role religion played in efforts to organize with farmers and factory workers in the context of deindustrialization and globalizing agriculture—a context that informs labor organizing’s contemporary resurgence and mainline Protestant denominations’ complicated ecumenical and social history.

Before joining the Department of Religion at Princeton, Emily received a B.A. in Religious Studies and History at Centre College. She completed the dual degree program at Columbia Theological Seminary, where she earned an M.Div. and M.A. in Practical Theology. She recently received an M.A. in History at West Virginia University.
