Bio/Description

His research and teaching focus on Judaism during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, with special interest in social history and material culture. Gardner has published two books and a number of articles on the concepts of wealth, poverty, and charity in ancient Judaism. His current book project explores the role of material culture in the formation of rabbinic Judaism during the Roman era.
