In recent years, Religion majors have received certificates in: African Studies African-American Studies American Studies East Asian Studies European Cultural Studies Gender and Sexuality Studies Hellenic Studies Judaic Studies Near Eastern Studies Theater and Dance Visual Arts Please note that while students are encouraged to explore the academic opportunities that the interdisciplinary programs provide, requirements for the major in Religion must take priority over work in the programs. Beginning in the fall of 2010, the Department of Religion and the Department of African American Studies will offer an opportunity for students to complete the requirements for the major in Religion and the certificate in African American Studies in a coherent and efficient manner. A student majoring in Religion may fulfill the requirements for the Certificate in African American Studies by completing three courses in African American Studies that are offered by Religion Department faculty and cross listed with AAS. In addition to AAS 201, a student would then only need to take one additional course either in the Race and Public Policy, or in the Global Race and Ethnicity sub-field in order to graduate with a certificate in African American Studies. One of those two additional courses would count as a cognate course for the major in Religion. Current cross-listed courses include: REL 256, AAS 256 African American Religious History REL 310, AAS 310 American Pentecostalism REL 367, AAS 346 The American Jeremiad and Social Criticism in the United States REL 372, AAS 382 Race, Religion, and the Harlem Renaissance REL 377, AAS 376, AMS 378 Race and Religion in America REL 582, AAS 582 Study of Race, Gender & Slavery in Western & Non-Western Societies AAS 305, REL 391, MUS 354, AMS 355 The History of Black Gospel Music AAS 318, REL 318 Black Women and Spiritual Narrative AAS 321, REL 321 Black Power and its Theology of Liberation AAS 325, ENG 393, REL 366 African American Autobiography AAS 332, REL 332 The Nation of Islam in America AAS 358, REL 379, GSS 359 Sexuality and Religion in America AAS 365, REL 362, ENG 394 Migration and the Literary Imagination AAS 368, REL 368, POL 424 Topics in African American Religion: Black Religion and the Harlem Renaissance AAS 506, REL 514, GSS 506 Sexuality and Religion in America AAS 510, REL 515 Race, Religion and the Harlem Renaissance In addition, there are a few Religion courses that would count as cognates for the certificate: REL 258 Religion in American Society REL 328, GSS 328 Women and Gender in Islamic Societies REL 358 Religion in American Culture Since 1830 REL 360, GSS 360, AMS 369 Women and American Religion For questions about the certificate, please contact the AAS Department Manager, April Peters or visit African American Studies website.
